Mexico has a ban on genetically engineered maize because they are afraid that they might contaminate their stock. For us, that was an eye-opener, because not only did we see for the first time genetic contamination in a center of diversity of a major food crop, but we also saw it in combination with the unfair world trade system that we have. So basically farmers in the US get loads of support from the government. They're able to produce maize or corn much cheaper than the Mexican farmers can. So they can export this with a hefty US government subsidy.
